EIA reduces Poland's shale gas estimates

Although the world has 10 percent more shale gas resources than the US's Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimated two years ago, the estimate for Poland's reserves in its latest report has dropped from 187 trillion to 148 trillion cubic feet.
The EIA says in its 2013 report, released on Monday, that China has the most in “technically recoverable” shale gas, followed by Argentina, United States, Algeria and Canada.
Poland, however, does not even manage to come into the top ten.
“Poland's Lubin Basin shale gas resource estimate was reduced from 44 trillion cubic feet in the 2011 report to 9 trillion cubic feet in this report,” the EIA says.
“The resource reduction was due to the more rigorous application of the requirement that a shale formation have at least a 2 percent minimum total organic content (TOC),” the report continues.
“For Poland as a whole, the shale gas resource estimate was reduced from 187 trillion cubic feet in the 2011 report to 148 trillion cubic feet in this report.”
The report notes that “political problems” have dogged the exploration of shale gas and a lack of clarity in planning and tax law have led to companies from America and Canada pulling out of the operations in trying to exploit the energy source in Poland. (pg)
