“It would be a crime not to be here,” Deputy Minister of Agriculture Tadeusz Nalewajk told Polish Radio.

“This is one of the largest food fairs in the world. And it concerns a market that is very receptive.”

Polish confectionery and dairy products, as well as poultry, are already available on the Chinese market, and seventy firms are participating in the Shanghai event.

However, the event also presents an opportunity to consolidate trading links with other countries in the region. Asia is one of the key developing markets for Polish exports.

SIAL China touts itself as “the largest Asian meeting point for the food and beverage industry.” Over 2200 exhibitors are plying their wares.

The international SIAL Group has been staging a series of fairs since 1964, with flagship events held in North America, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia.

A visit by President Bronislaw Komorowski to China in November 2011, followed by Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, were intended to strengthen economic and cultural ties between the two countries. Economic forums bringing together businessmen from both countries were held on both occasions.
