Cafes in the cities of Krakow, Wroclaw and Gdansk will be taking part in the charity fund-raiser from Friday to Sunday, with proceeds from the sales of cappuccinos being assigned to two aid projects in Africa.

Capuchin friars in Krakow came up with the original idea, and besides joining forces with several cafes across the city, the brothers will be opening the doors of their monastery on 6 January.

On Sunday, visitors to the monastery will be able to drink cappuccinos rustled up by none other than the friars themselves.

Proceeds will go to towards funding meals at an orphanage run by the Capuchins in the parish of Ndim, in the Central African Republic.

Funds will also be sent to Baibokum in the neighbouring Republic of Chad, where Capuchin friars aim to transform a run-down library into an educational centre.

More details on the campaign, including information about all the cafes taking part, can be found on the web site Cappuccino dla Afryki.

Cappuccinos take their name from the colour of the robes of Capuchin friars. (nh)
