Pawlak, who is also minister of economy, noted that the prospective fall in the cost of oil will accompany the general trend for decreasing oil prices.
“There is a chance that during the summer holidays, Poles will pay 5 zloty [1.2 euro] for a litre of petrol,” told the TVP public television network.
At a press conference in parliament earlier in the day, Pawlak noted that oil prices have fallen from 150 to 80 dollars per barrel over the last month.
He described the rate of anything over 100 dollars as “absurdly high”, and argued that 60, 70, or 80 dollars a barrel would be much better suited to the current strained economic situation.
“I remember an announcement by the chairman of PKN Orlen [Poland's largest oil company and petrol retailer], that after Euro 2012 drivers will have a nice surprise, and I hope that this announcement will come true,” Pawlak concluded. (nh/pg)
