Polish film buffs mark the 45th anniversary of the death of the actor Zbigniew Cybulski, known as ‘the Polish James Dean’.
He died on 8 January 1967 in Wrocław under the wheels of a departing train, at the age of 39.
Cybulski graduated from the State Higher School of Drama in Kraków in 1953 and joined the Wybrzeże Theatre company in Gdańsk, before moving to Warsaw in the early 1960s.
But it was as a film actor that he skyrocketed to international stardom, with leads in Andrzej Wajda’s Ashes and Diamonds (1958) and Wojciech Has’s The Saragossa Manuscript (1964). He has appeared in 34 films.
Thanks to his acting style – revolutionary at the time – and his image of a rebel, dressed in a leather jacket and wearing sunglasses, Cybulski became a legend in his lifetime. (mk)
