The Warsaw Philharmonic is on a tour of China, coinciding with a visit by Poland's president, Bronislaw Komorowski.

In the first three concerts, in the city of Dalian in the north-east, the orchestra was conducted by Yoel Levi, Principal Guest Conductor of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in Tel Aviv, and the programme included Henryk Wieniawski’s Second Violin Concerto with the Chinese virtuoso Zhijiong Wang as soloist.

The fourth, and last, concert of the tour takes place tonight in the National Centre for the Performing Arts Beijing in the presence of Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, now on a state visit to China.

The orchestra is conducted by its Music Director Antoni Wit and the programme includes Wieniawski’s Second Violin Concerto, Noskowski’s symphonic poet ‘The Steppe’ and ‘Krzesany’ (Sparking Dance) by the contemporary composer Wojciech Kilar.

This is the 133rd foreign tour by the Warsaw Philharmonic since its foundation in 1901. (mk)
