The troubled singer, who is widely acclaimed as one of the most authentic talents to emerge in the manicured world of pop in recent years, was too incapacitated by drink to give a coherent performance at her gig in Belgrade, Serbia, on Saturday.

A bemused looking Winehouse wandered off stage several times, at one point throwing her microphone onto the floor, prompting a tide of boos from the disappointed Serbian fans.

“Despite feeling she wanted to fulfill these commitments, she has agreed with management that she cannot perform to the best of her ability and will return home,” said a spokesman for the singer.

"‘Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as its takes for this to happen," the statement continued.

Winehouse was scheduled to perform at the Art POP Festival in Bydgoszcz on 30 July.

Newspapers in England are already declaring that she will be off stage, “for years.” (nh/pg/mk)
