Singers from countries as far away as Brazil, Costa Rica, South Korea, the United States, New Zealand and Venezuela were named among second-round participants as a jury verdict was announced late on Tuesday.

Contestants from Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Russia, Ukraine and the Czech Republic are also among those vying for a place in the competition finals.

The morning session of second-round auditions was scheduled to open in the Polish capital at 10 am on Wednesday.

The Stanisław Moniuszko International Vocal Competition is among the highlights of the Year of Moniuszko, a celebration of the life and oeuvre of the father of Polish national opera who was born 200 years ago this month.

The Moniuszko competition has grown in stature since its launch in 1992, a fact reflected by its star-studded jury.

The competition jury this year is chaired by Peter Mario Katona, casting director at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Judges include casting directors from the Metropolitan Opera in New York (Jonathan Friend), the Polish National Opera (Izabella Kłosińska), the Opera National de Lyon (Robert Koerner), Berlin’s Staatsoper (Tobias Oliver Hasan), and the Lyric Opera in Chicago (Eva Maria Wieser), as well as two world-famous Polish singers, tenor Piotr Beczała and alto Ewa Podleś.

The competition prizewinners will be announced on May 11.

Past winners of the Moniuszko competition include world-renowned soprano Aleksandra Kurzak, baritone Mariusz Kwiecień and countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński.
