Celebrations were to kick off on Tuesday evening with an event called Gramy dla Europy (Playing for Europe) at Warsaw’s National Stadium.

The event is a multimedia outdoor show with some of the biggest names in Polish music.

Musicians such as Dawid Kwiatkowski, Golec uOrkiestra, O.S.T.R. and The Dumplings were to play new arrangements of their hit songs from the last 15 years.

Other attractions from May 1 to May 4 include a concert of classical music, an exhibition dedicated to the founding fathers of the European Union, a family picnic and a big sing-along of Polish songs.

Poland became part of the EU on May 1, 2004, a historic step that underlined the country’s re-alignment with the West after decades of communist rule.
