At a ceremony at London’s Sadler’s Wells theatre on Monday, Warlikowski received an award for best director for his work on Czech composer Leos Janáček’s From the House of the Dead. The production was staged at the Royal Opera House in London.

Warlikowski is regarded as one of Europe’s most acclaimed opera directors. He is the artistic director of the Nowy Theatre in Warsaw.

Another award winner was Waldemar Dąbrowski, the director of the National Opera in Warsaw and a former deputy minister of culture. Dąbrowski secured his award for lifetime achievement and for his work in managing the National Opera.

The US ambassador to Poland, Georgette Mosbacher, called the awards “a great success of Polish culture.”

Polish opera, film and theatre director Mariusz Treliński and tenor Piotr Beczała were among last year’s winners of the International Opera Awards.
