Eight fire deaths in Poland as new year arrives

Eight people were killed and 38 others injured as a result of fires in Poland on New Year's Eve and New Year’s Day, firefighters have said.

A total of 1,067 fires were reported nationwide on the last day of 2018 and the first day of 2019, a spokesman for the State Fire Service, Paweł Frątczak, said on Wednesday.

In all, firefighters were called out 2,625 times over the New Year’s holiday to attend fires and other emergencies nationwide, Frątczak said.

In the same period a year ago, firefighters were called out to deal with 1,988 emergencies country-wide, including 878 fires, which claimed three lives, Poland’s PAP news agency reported.
