The Dar Młodzieży ship was on Tuesday due to sail into the port of San Francisco where it was expected to be welcomed by a group of American sailboats in the San Francisco Bay.

On Wednesday, an official welcoming ceremony attended by Polish diplomats is scheduled to be held for the ship in San Francisco.

Local residents will have the opportunity to tour the Polish ship that day, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency has reported.

The crew of the Dar Młodzieży last month marked Polish Independence Day in the Japanese port of Osaka, where local officials joined in the celebrations, according to the IAR news agency.

The Dar Młodzieży is on Saturday due to leave San Francisco and set sail for Los Angeles.

The Polish ship will next head on to Panama for the Roman Catholic Church's World Youth Day in January.

The Dar Młodzieży left the Polish Baltic port of Gdynia in May, with plans to call in at 22 ports around the world during its 10-month Independence Cruise.

Poland this year marks the centenary of regaining its independence after more than 120 years of foreign rule.
