The Virtuti Militari medal, the country’s highest military honour, originally belonged to Aleksandra Piłsudska, the Polish statesman’s second wife.

The long-lost order has been handed over to the Józef Piłsudski Museum in Sulejówek by Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz, according to public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency.

Czaputowicz said the decoration had been awarded to Aleksandra Piłsudska for her contribution during World War I to Poland’s process of regaining independence.

The Virtuti Militari order was reinstated by Piłsudski as a state honour after Poland regained independence in 1918.
