The New York-based organisation bringing together US film critics chose the production over films such as Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma, Hirokazu Koreeda’s Shoplifters and Gustav Möller’s Guilty.
Peter Farrelly’s Green Book won in the best film category as the awards were announced on Tuesday.
Cold War follows the love story of two people of different backgrounds and temperaments. Their tempestuous relationship unfolds against the backdrop of the Cold War era on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
The film stars Polish actors Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, Agata Kulesza and Borys Szyc.
An award ceremony honouring this year’s winners will be held in New York in January.
