Polish writer shortlisted for US National Book Award

Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk’s "Flights" is one of five books on the short list for the 2018 National Book Award, one of the most prestigious literary awards in the United States.

The novel (Polish title: Bieguni) has been nominated in the English Translation category.
Other books on the list are by authors from Iran, Italy, Norway and Japan.
The National Book Awards ceremony is due to be held in New York on November 14.
Earlier this year, Flights won Tokarczuk the Man Booker International Prize in Britain.
The book, which first appeared in Poland in 2007, has been translated into English by Jennifer Croft and published by Fitzcarraldo Editions.
It is described by critics as a philosophical meditation on modern-day travel.
Fifty-six-year-old Tokarczuk is among the most popular and critically acclaimed Polish writers. Two other of her books, Primeval and Other Times and House of Day, House of Night, are also available in English translations.
