The Barbarian in the Garden was published after it was translated into Portuguese by Henryk Siewierski, a lecturer at the University of Brasilia.

The book describes Herbert’s journey through France and Italy in the late 1950s.

A selection of Herbert’s poems has also been published recently in Brazil, translated by Piotr Kilanowski.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Zbigniew Herbert, who was one of the most influential 20th-century Polish poets, essayists and moralists.

Herbert’s most popular works include Struna swiatła (The Chord of Light), Hermes, pies i gwiazda (Hermes, Dog and Star), and Pan Cogito (Mr. Cogito).

An anti-communist, Herbert gave his wholehearted support to Poland’s Solidarity freedom movement. After the imposition of martial law in the country in December 1981, his poems were recited at clandestine meetings.

Herbert’s international honours included the Herder Prize, the Jerusalem Prize and the T.S. Eliot Prize.
