Road death toll in Poland among highest in EU: EC stats

Around 2,800 people died and 11,000 were severely injured in road accidents in Poland in 2017, putting Poland close to the bottom of a European Union ranking on road safety.

Some 33,000 road accidents and nearly 440,000 collisions occurred in Poland last year, a European Commission report cited by the Rzeczpospolita daily has found.
The country came 27th in the commission’s ranking on road deaths, followed only by Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania.
There were 75 fatalities per million residents in Poland, while in Sweden there were 25 road deaths per million, the European Commission said.
Some of the key reasons behind the grim statistics are: sub-par road safety education among Polish drivers, inadequate training at driving schools, and a growing number of high-speed roads that Poles are not accustomed to, experts cited by the Rzeczpospolita daily said.
