Musical spectacular to mark Polish independence

A hundred musical works will be played in Poland and abroad in an ambitious project to mark the 100th anniversary of the country’s independence, Culture Minister Piotr Gliński said on Tuesday.

The performances will take place at 22 venues including 11 abroad on November 11, when Poland celebrates Independence Day.
Gliński said that Polish music from the 20th and 21st century will sound out "in the 11 most important musical institutions in Poland and 11 prestigious venues internationally.”
"The best orchestras and choirs have accepted our invitation," he added.
The 100 Polish musical works to be performed will include pieces by composers such as Karol Szymanowski, Witold Lutosławski, Henryk Górecki and Krzysztof Penderecki, Gliński said.
"The spectacular concept of the project and its range make it a unique venture, including probably in international terms. Nobody before us has come up with such a wild idea,” he added.
Poland regained independence on November 11, 1918, the day World War I ended, after 123 years of partition by Russia, Austria and Prussia.
