The woman, who had queued up for the Poland captain’s autograph, did not have a notebook or a piece of paper on her, the PAP news agency reported.

She pulled out her passport, which Lewandowski duly signed after a training session by the Polish national squad in the southern Russian resort of Sochi, where the Poles have their training base, PAP reported.

A Russian passport with such an addition, even if it’s the autograph of a major football star, is considered invalid, the Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reported.

The World Cup in Russia opened on Thursday with a match between the host nation and Saudi Arabia at Moscow’s Luzhniki stadium.

Poland take on Senegal, Colombia and Japan in the group stage of the tournament.

The Poles are scheduled to open their campaign against Senegal at Moscow's Spartak stadium on June 19.
