Dozens of Skolimowski's paintings and graphics will be on show at the Polish National Opera in Warsaw until the end of June.

Skolimowski has claimed that his creativity was outside of his control and that artists were not entirely aware of the process behind their work.

His works have been shown across Europe and in the US.

Skolimowski is most well known for his directorial work. He directed films including Start (The Departure), a 1967 picture which won the Golden Bear award at the Berlinale film festival, and Krzyk (The Shout), which won a special prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1978.

He received the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement at the 2016 Venice Film Festival.

Skolimowski turns 80 on May 5.
