Warsaw Philharmonic plays before Japanese emperor

Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michito were the guests of honour at a concert by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall on Monday.

The gala event opened worldwide celebrations of the centenary of Polish independence in 2018 and was also a prelude to next year’s centenary of Polish-Japanese diplomatic relations.
The concert was attended by the Polish ambassador to Japan, Jacek Izydorczyk.
The programme of the concert included the Overture for Orchestra by Ignacy Jan Paderewski, the legendary pianist, composer and statesman who lobbied for an independent Poland during World War I.
Other treats for fans included Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1, with young Russian pianist Nikolay Khozyainov as the soloist, and Dvorak’s Symphony from the New World.
The event wound up the Japanese leg of the orchestra’s Asian tour, which included concerts in Hyogo, Sapporo, Nagoya, Niigata and Fukushima.
On Wednesday and Friday, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by its Music Director Jacek Kaspszyk, will be performing in Seoul, South Korea.
