Featuring the statement “No Polish or Eastern Bloc fishermen”, the sign at Field Farm Fisheries near Bicester, Oxfordshire, sparked outrage in Polish angler Radosław Popławski.
“I thought of my son and imagined how someone who came to the fishing lake with their children will have to explain to them that the fishery was out of bounds for them because of their parents’ Polish roots or different accent,” Popławski told Polish Radio.
The owner of Farm Fisheries has refused to remove the sign despite Popławski’s efforts.
In an interview for a local newspaper from 2009, the owner explained that immigrants had been stealing his fish, particularly carp, prompting him to post the sign eight years ago.
Under British law, licensed anglers can fish for recreational purposes but are obliged to release their catch. (aba/pk)
