Nearly 13 million visitors flocked to the historic southern city, over 350,000 more than last year.

The increase has surprised the city authorities.

Deputy Mayor Andrzej Kulig said: "We thought that last year's result, boosted by the organisation of World Youth Day, would be unbeatable, because this year we did not organise such a large event.”

The Roman Catholic Church’s World Youth Day event, attended by Pope Francis, was held in and around Kraków in July 2016.

It was one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, drawing more than a million faithful from around the globe.

Italians were the most frequent visitors to Kraków this year, followed by Germans, French, Spaniards, Scandinavians and Britons.
