French honour for Polish theatre director

Polish theatre director, set designer and playwright Krystian Lupa has been awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, a French distinction for contributions to the arts.

Lupa was given the order's highest, Commander's category by French Ambassador to Poland Pierre Lévy, who praised Lupa's contribution to Polish-French cultural ties.
One of Lupa's many productions staged in France, Plac Bohaterów (Heroes Square) was twice billed at the Festival d'Avignion and was highly acclaimed in France, Lévy added.

Lupa, now 74 years old, studied at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, the National Film School in Łódź, central Poland, and the Theatre Academy in Kraków.
He began his career as a director towards the end of the 1970s, working mainly for the Stary Theatre in Kraków.
He has been on the faculty of the Theatre Academy in Kraków as a professor in its directing department for over 20 years.
His honours include several prestigious Polish distinctions, such as the Order of Polonia Restituta (Reborn Poland) and the Gloria Artis Medal of Merit for Culture, as well as the European Theatre Prize.
The Ordre des Arts et des Lettres was set up by the French culture minister in 1957. Its recipients include such prominent Polish artists as composer Krzysztof Penderecki, actors Daniel Olbrychski and Krystyna Janda, and theatre and opera director Krzysztof Warlikowski. (vb/mk/pk)
