British filmmaker Branagh honoured in Poland

The Krzysztof Kieślowski Award, named after the famous Polish director, is presented to “versatile actors and actresses who contribute to the art of filmmaking”.

Branagh was also given the Cinematographer-Director Duo Award, alongside his long-time collaborator Haris Zambarloukos. They presented their latest film, “Murder on the Orient Express”, to the festival audience.

The Camerimage Festival said in a statement that Branagh “was always keenly aware of the role of the image in film storytelling, and as a director always tried to work with great cinematographers who he knew could enhance his already strong artistic vision.”

Founded in 1993, Camerimage is considered the world’s most prestigious festival devoted exclusively to the art of cinematography. This year it is being held for the 25th time.

Its guests have included many household names in the cinema world. One of this year’s side-line events is a retrospective exhibition of paintings and graphic art by the American director David Lynch, which opened Sunday at the Contemporary Art Centre in the Polish city of Toruń.

“I started as a painter, and it was later that I began painting my films and I keep on painting pictures in between making films,” Lynch told a press conference in Toruń.

Lynch received the Director’s Award from the Camerimage Festival in 2000, during his first visit to Poland.
