Polish city to honour writer Gombrowicz

A memorial to the famous Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz is to be unveiled in the city of Radom, some 100 km south of Warsaw, later this year.

Designed by Sławomir Micek, the statue is to show Gombrowicz seated at a chess table, with an empty seat opposite for anyone wishing to spend some time in the writer’s company and to have a photo taken.
Gombrowicz was a frequent visitor to Wsola, a village near Radom, where his brother lived. The writer used to go there between 1924 to 1939 to study for exams, write and rest. Several years ago, the mansion of Gombrowicz’s brother in Wsola was turned into a museum with the writer’s letters, manuscripts, documents, photographs and numerous memorabilia, including a suitcase he had with him when departing from Poland in 1939.
Radom is the venue of the annual International Gombrowicz Festival, which brings together drama companies from around the world. The event is regularly attended by the writer’s widow, Rita Gombrowicz.
Witold Gombrowicz died in 1969 in France at the age of 65. His best known works include the dramas The Marriage and Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy and the novels Cosmos and Pornography. His work has been translated into 34 languages. (mk/gs)
