Chicago celebrates Polish constitution

An annual parade in Chicago on Sunday celebrated the 3rd of May anniversary of Poland’s first constitution, which was also Europe's first and the second in the world.

Thousands of people, dressed in Poland's national colours, marched in the parade which was also attended by Bruce Rauner, the governor of Illinois, Poland’s deputy Senate speaker Adam Bielan, and Polish Senator Anna Maria Anders.
It was the 126th time that a Polish Constitution Day parade was staged in Chicago.
Poland's 3 May Constitution was adopted in 1791 and is considered one of the most important achievements in the country's history.
But it was in effect for only a year before the Polish-Russian War of 1792 led to Poland disappearing as a state for over 120 years before regaining independence in 1918.
Polish is the third most spoken language in Chicago, after English and Spanish, and the city is home to the second largest population of Poles in the world, after Warsaw. (vb)
