The procession started and ended at St Anne's Church next to Warsaw's royal castle square.

It followed a large cross, which was borne in turn by representatives of the clergy, students, railway workers, lawyers, craftsmen, firefighters and servicemen, among other groups.

It was the 23rd time the annual procession, called “Central Way of the Cross”, was held in Warsaw.

Meanwhile, Poles throughout the country took part in similar processions in their local churches as the predominantly Catholic country enters the Easter long weekend. (vb/di)
