The artwork, carved between 1477 and 1484 by German sculptor Veit Stossin, is the largest Gothic alterpiece in the world.
On Tuesday, the chairman of the Social Committee for the Restoration of Historical Monuments of Kraków, prof. Franciszek Ziejka, said that the money would be spent over a period of three years
“The Veit Stoss altarpiece is one of the masterpieces of sacred art belonging to world heritage. I believe that with the support [of the Committee] as well as other funds, we will be able to return it to its former glory,” Ziejka said.
This year, the parish will receive nearly PLN 2.2 million.
The Veit Stoss Altarpiece is about 13 metres high and 11 metres wide when the panels of the triptych are completely opened. (rg)
