Warsaw school students to attend UN event in NYC

Children from the British School in Warsaw will take part in a programme based on 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which Shannon O’Shea of the UN’s Children’s Fund called “the ultimate to-do list for our people and our planet”.

The goals are a total of 169 targets the UN aims to hit by 2030, including gender equality, clean water and sanitation and eliminating poverty worldwide.

The World’s Largest Lesson aims to have school students involved in addressing these issues.

“Beyond learning what these goals are, we are going to need you to think about what you can do to make them a reality,” O’Shea said in a video message to students.

She suggested children make small changes, such as composting and switching to reusable shopping bags.

“Your school will be participating in an action-oriented project, specifically looking at the goals that deal with health and hunger,” O’Shea said.

Selected students from the British School in Warsaw will travel in July to New York City to attend the United Nations High Level Political Forum, where they will present their ideas.

“The High Level Political Forum is central to the success of the Sustainable Development Goals and we are delighted that our students will give a voice to children’s views on these key issues,” said Andrew Fitzmaurice, CEO of Nord Anglia Education, a family of schools which includes the British School in Warsaw.

“There is no better opportunity for our students to practice diplomacy and leadership than at UN Headquarters with influential policymakers from around the world,” he added. (vb/pk)
