“Physics reveals what happened many millions of years ago, and today is an important mechanism surrounding us,” Duda said.

“Recognising these phenomena causes an incredible amount of opportunities for humanity to develop technologically, which gives us progress. In fact, the work of physicists is extremely important. It is of fundamental importance for the development of mankind into what we call modernity," Duda said during an award ceremony on Monday.

Roger Penrose (b. 1931) is the Emeritus Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at University of Oxford. He is an expert in general relativity and cosmology.

Andrzej Trautman (b. 1933) specialises in general relativity. (rg)
