Polish police have recovered a painting depicting Marshal Piłsudski by Wojciech Kossak, which was stolen following a break-in at a private apartment in Kraków in 1997.
The painting, entitled “Piłsudski on Horseback” shows the Marshal riding Kasztanka, his favourite mare.
Since 1997, the artwork had been listed as stolen. It was recovered by police in Warsaw.
Piłsudski saved Poland from a Soviet Russian onslaught in 1920, thus saving the country from communism. (rg)
