A Polish architecture icon, and symbol of the city of Katowice, the "Spodek" (flying saucer hall) celebrated its 45th birthday on Saturday with an open day.

All through the day visitors could join training sessions with athletes, test the ice rink, and take guided tours of places usually out of bounds to visitors.
The anniversary was also being marked with an exhibition of posters, a debate on the future of the hall, and a concert featuring top Polish bands.
Since being built in 1971, Spodek has been one of the best recognised sports and event halls in Poland. (ek/rg)
