A commemorative plaque has been unveiled in the south-western city of Wrocław, close to the National Music Forum, dedicated to Sir John Eliot Gardiner, one of the most charismatic conductors of our time.

Attending the unveiling ceremony on Sunday, the British conductor said he was happy to renew his links with Wrocław, where he has performed many times and where his great-grandmother was born.
The ceremony was held before the final concert of the Wratislavia Cantans Festival, which featured Bach’s St Matthew Mass performed by Sir John Eliot’s English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir.
Gardiner conducted the first half of the concert. During the interval, he felt unwell and in the second part his assistant Silas Wollston took over the baton.
Gardiner has been a frequent guest at the Wratislavia Cantans Festival since 1981. (mk/pk)
