The General Director of ECC Wrocław 2016, Krzysztof Maj, told a press conference that Wrocław’s status as a European Capital of Culture has already boosted the city’s image abroad.

“There have been 18,000 news reports about the European Capital of Culture in Wrocław, including almost 3,500 in foreign media [in the first half of the year]. It has been calculated that the promotional effect of these publications for the city was worth PLN 70 million [EUR 16 million],” Maj said.

“This is twice as much as all the large cities in Poland spend on promoting themselves per year,” he added.

One beneficiary has been the National Museum in Wrocław, which saw a 35 percent increase in visitors in the first six months of the year.

Wrocław has been designated European Capital of Culture for the whole of 2016 along with the Spanish town of San Sebastian.

In the second half of the year, Wrocław will play host to the Capital of Rock Festival in August, the Theatre Olympics from October, and the European Film Awards in December, in addition to hundreds of other cultural events. (sl/pk)
