The rules come into force on 1 July, a time of year when trams, buses and the underground can get stiflingly hot during warm weather.

The new regulations say: "Persons endangering security and order or exposing passengers to discomfort during travel due to lack of elementary personal hygiene (dirt and odour) can be called on (...) to maintain orderly behaviour or to leave a vehicle or metro station."

City councillors were not unanimous in backing the new rules. Thirty-one voted in favour, 14 were against and nine abstained. (pk)
