Poles among biggest fans of Pope Francis

Pope Francis is the world’s most popular leader, according to a new poll, with Poland among the countries which most support the pontiff.

A total of 54 percent of the world’s population has a favourable opinion of Pope Francis, against 12 percent who hold an unfavourable opinion and 34 percent who do not know how to evaluate the pope, said a new report by WIN/Gallup International.
The poll said that in the 64 countries surveyed, “popular opinion is favourable to the pope in 60 of them”.
At the top of the list were Portugal (where 94 percent had a positive opinion of the pontiff), the Philippines (93 percent), Argentina (89 percent), Italy (86 percent), Colombia (84 percent), Lebanon (80 percent), Spain (80 percent), Peru (79 percent), Poland (78 percent) and Ecuador (78 percent).
Jean K Marc Leger, President of WIN/GallupInternational, said: “Pope Francis is a leader who transcends his own religion. Our study shows that an ample majority of citizens of the world, of different religious affiliations and across regions, have a favourable image of the Pope”. (rg/pk)
