They are all by the celebrity photographer Milton H. Greene and are a small fraction of Greene’s collection of around 3,700 photographs, which became Poland’s property in the wake of an embezzlement scandal of the early 1990s.

American businessman Dino Matingas, who was accused of cheating Poland out of millions of dollars, gave the collection to Poland in partial repayment for Poland’s losses.

In recent years, small parts of the collection have been auctioned off. In 2014, the bulk of the collection, comprising of over 3,000 items, was purchased by the Hala Ludowa Enterprise of Wrocław.

Apart from the photographs of Monroe, the collection includes shots featuring Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Lisa Minelli, Marlene Dietrich, Paul Newman, Alfred Hitchcock and Marlon Brando.

The ”Bus Stop” Monroe exhibition remains on show until 24 March. (mk/nh)
