The prize of EUR 15,000 will be handed out 2 March in Berlin.
Born in 1945, Zagajewski is one of Poland’s best-known contemporary writers. He is a poet, prose writer, essayist and translator, and the winner of a slew of prestigious literary awards.
He has often been mentioned as a possible candidate for the Nobel Prize in literature. His work has been translated into many languages.
Zagajewski moved to Paris in 1982. After the collapse of communism, he returned to live in Kraków, southern Poland, in 2002.
The Jean Amery prize, named after an accomplished Vienna-born essayist, is awarded every two years. The founders of the award are Germany’s Klett-Cotta publishing house and the Allianz Cultural Foundation in cooperation with Eurozine, a network of European cultural journals. (pk)
