In 1981, when Poland was under Communist rule, 51 percent of Poles went to Mass. The figure fell to 39.1 percent in 2014, though Poland is still a predominantly Roman Catholic country.

There are differences in attendance figures regionally. The most religious area is south-eastern Poland, while the least religious area is the north-west.

"This study just shows how much the habit of the obligation of going to church on Sunday is still rooted in Polish society," said Dr Maria Rogaczewska, from Warsaw University’s Institute of Social Studies. (pk)
