Treasures of Polish archaeological dig revealed

A hoard of recently discovered treasures has been presented in Lublin, mid-eastern Poland, revealing the latest finds from the site of a medieval fortified settlement.

The items, which include silver jewellery from the 10th and 11th centuries, were discovered in Czermno, near the Ukrainian border.
Archaeologists from the John Paul II Catholic University in Lublin (KUL) lead the ongoing international project, which was launched several years ago.
Czermno was the site of one of the largest Slav fortified settlements in Europe.

The quality of the jewellery has proved a source of delight for the team involved in the dig.
“Those who created the pieces - probably 1,000 years ago - must have been masters of their profession,” commented KUL's Professor Andrzej Kokowski.
The treasures, which were presented in the university's library (currently not open to the general public), will ultimately be housed in the Regional Museum in Tomaszów Lubelski. (nh/rk)
