The damage was reported to the authorities by Milejczyce mayor Jerzy Iwanowiec.

The police are currently conducting an investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Damaging graves is a crime in Poland, and could lead to sentences of up to five years in prison.

The cemetery in Milejczyce contains grave of Soviet-Army soldiers who fought during the Second World War – a total of more than 1,600 people.

The central element of the cemetery is a concrete pedestal with a large hand and a metal Russian Orthodox Church cross. The inscription on the pedestal reads “Heroic Soviet Army soldiers who fell in the fight against Nazism in 1941-1944. Honour to their memory”. (rg/rk)
