Veteran film director Krzysztof Zanussi is preparing a film that re-explores the Faustian concept of selling one's soul to the devil.

The movie, which has a working title of 'Ether', is being written by Zanussi himself, and he is close to finishing the script.

The action takes place before World War I, and it will be an intimate movie with a Faustian motif,” he told the wnas.pl website.

Zanussi says that if all goes well production could begin this coming winter.

According to the director, the film will echo contemporary dilemmas.

“These are eternal themes,” he said.

Zanussi was a leading proponent of the so-called “Cinema of Moral Anxiety” of the seventies and early eighties, probing chinks in Poland's then communist reality.

Besides the Faustian project, he is also co-producing Agnieszka Holland's forthcoming thriller based on Olga Tokarczuk's novel 'Drive your Plough over the Bones of the Dead'. (nh)
