The work, based on a surrealist play by Alfred Jarry, was premiered in 1991 by the Bavarian State Opera for the opening of the Munich Opera Festival.
On 4 July, Penderecki will conduct in Saarbrucken the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra from Katowice and the Kraków Radio Choir in his oratorio ‘Seven Gates of Jerusalem’, written in 1996 to commemorate the third millennium of the city of Jerusalem.
Polish music is the theme of this year’s Musikfestspiele Saar. Its programme included recitals by the pianists Krystian Zimerman, Rafał Blechacz and Leszek Możdżer, as well as works by such composers as Karol Szymanowski and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki. (mk/nh)
