UK reggae veterans UB40 wrapped up the last night of this year's Life Festival Oświecim on Saturday, championing a message of peace and tolerance in the town of the former Nazi German death camp.

The festival was launched in 2010 by a journalist Darek Maciborek who grew up in the town in southern Poland.

His aim was to “break the spell” of darkness that the Nazi Germans brought to the town, promoting a message that there is no place for anti-semitism, racism, and other forms of xenophobia.

Headliners in previous years at Oświecim's MOSiR Stadium have included Peter Gabriel, Sting and Eric Clapton.

Besides UB40, famed for such tracks as 'Kingston Town' and 'Red, Red Wine,' this year's festival saw performances from Manu Chao, Polish singer Kajah and Chris de Burgh of 'Lady in Red' fame. (nh)
