‘Ida’ producers hope for new contracts

The Łódź-based Opus Film, the main producer of Paweł Pawlikowski’s Oscar-winning film ‘Ida’, is confident that the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film will translate into joint productions with foreign partners.

The director of Opus Film, Paweł Dzięcioł, told the PAP news agency that he had talks in Los Angeles on the shooting in Poland of an American feature and a film series.
“These were very concrete talks. Both projects relate to Polish problems,’ Dzięcioł said, adding that he also hopes for a follow-up of the cooperation with Pawlikowski. “He’s currently writing a new script and would like to work on the project with Opus Film,” he said.
The Oscar for Ida has brought a fresh wave of interest in the film. In Poland it has attracted about 220,000 viewers, twice as many as until the end of 2014.
As many as 20 countries are interested in purchasing the distribution rights, in addition to the 60 where the film had already been sold before it received the Academy Award.
The action of Ida is set in Poland in the 1960s. The main protagonist, Ida, is an orphan who as a child was handed over to a nunnery during the Second World War.
Before taking her vows, she is asked by her Mother Superior to visit her aunt, her sole surviving relative, who had been a Stalinist judge. The two women embark on a journey to discover their family’s past, during which the mystery of Ida’s Jewish roots is revealed. (mk/jb)
