The theme of this year’s Eurovision competition is “Building Bridges”.

“Through my artistic activity, I am trying to promote the idea of combining the two worlds, which until recently seemed to be unable to connect – the world of people with and without disabilities.

“The bridge of understanding between them is strengthening every year, and I believe that one day the boundaries will be blurred,” Monika Kuszyńska said.

The former singer for the Varius Manx band was involved in a car accident in 2006 which left her paralysed from the waist down. Since then she has been able to move around via wheelchair.

“The theme of the festival is to build bridges. Kuszyńska can express this idea, not only in music but also in her life. She could, after a dramatic accident, not only return to the stage, but also engage in social activities.

“Her example and hard work shows that – even if you cannot stand on your feet in a literal sense – you can, however, be successful, and what’s more – to help others who find it difficult to rise, said Juliusz Braun, CEO of broadcaster TVP (the patron of the Polish leg of the competition). (rg/jb)
