'Gods' garners 7 Eagles at Polish Film Awards

The awards, which are voted on by members of the Polish Film Academy, echoed the outcome of September's Gdynia Film Festival, the key annual showcase of new Polish movies.

'Gods' takes a wry look at the struggles of the late Dr Zbigniew Religa, the flamboyant surgeon who refused to give up on his goal of carrying out a heart transplant, despite the impoverished conditions of communist Poland during the 1980s.

Palkowski's witty film won Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography and the Audience Award (the movie was the biggest success at the Polish box office in 2014)

Meanwhile, lead actor Tomasz Kot (pictured above), whose expansive performance made him a household name in Poland, won the gong for Best Actor, while Piotr Głowacki picked up the prize for Best Supporting Actor.

Other winners at Mondays ceremony included WWII epic 'Warsaw 44', Jan Komasa's movie about the ill-fated Warsaw Rising against the Nazi Germans. The film took three Eagles, covering Best Production Design, Best Editing, and Discovery of the Year for actress Zofia Wichlacz.

Komasa was also recognised for his parallel project, 'Warsaw Uprising', which brought archival footage of the insurrection to life by adding colour, sound, and dialogue. The work won the Best Documentary and Best Sound gongs.

Although nominated in 11 categories, Władyslaw Pasikowski's Cold War spy thriller 'Jack Strong' only managed one win, for Best Actress (Maja Ostaszewska).

The Eagles have been awarded since 1999. (nh)
