Body will have its world premiere next month at the festival, a pre-requisite of running for the much coveted top prize, the Golden Bear.

Szumowska, who made waves at the festival in 2013 with In the Name of..., a movie about homosexual love within the Roman Catholic Church, has turned her attention to the process of mourning in her latest film.

Seasoned actor Janusz Gajos takes the roll of a cynical public prosecutor who, together with his anorexic daughter (Justyna Suwala), is compelled to face some home truths after the loss of a loved one.

Maja Ostaszewska (Katyn, Jack Strong) plays a therapist who has unexpected news for the pair.

Szumowska is facing stiff competition at the festival. Although the last candidates have yet to be confirmed, movies already in the running include Werner Herzog's Queen of the Desert, a film about Gertrude Bell, the British explorer whose goals became entwined with those of T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia.

The 65th Berlin International Film Festival opens on 5 February. (nh)
