Komasa triumphed in the film category thanks to his movie Warsaw 44, which explores the plight of young Polish insurgents in the 1944 Warsaw Rising against the Nazi German occupiers.

Critics voting for the awards concluded that Komasa had shown ''imagination, ambition, and perfect directorial craft,'' in bringing the epic project to fruition.

According to Polityka, ''the tragedy of the Warsaw Rising was told in a new language that strikes a chord with young viewers.''

Meanwhile, crime fiction writer Zygmunt Miloszewski won in the literature category. His novels about the fictional Prosecutor Tadeusz Szacki have been translated into several languages.

Polityka noted that the novels ''combine gripping intrigue with a penetrating portrait of contemporary Poland, diagnosing key problems in society.''

Polish reggae star Pablopavo won in the popular music category, and quartet Kwadrofonik in the classical section. Director Radoslaw Rychcik triumphed in the theatre category, while artist and curator Jakub Woynarowski was top dog in the visual arts.

A special award for a 'creator of culture' as given to film director Agnieszka Holland (In Darkness, Burning Bush).

Polityka's Passports have been awarded since 1993. (nh)
